About the Role
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a motivated and compassionate Registered Nurse to join Robin Ward, part of its Blood, Cells and Cancer directorate. This is an opportunity to contribute to specialist children's healthcare while developing your nursing skills in a highly advanced clinical environment.
As the hospital works towards developing a new Children's Cancer Centre, its teams continue to support children and young people living with complex conditions. Robin Ward is a 10-bed specialist ward caring for patients with blood disorders, cancers and leukaemia, as well as selected immune, metabolic, gastrointestinal and rheumatological conditions.
The ward also supports children requiring bone marrow or stem cell transplants, gene therapy and thymus transplants. GOSH is one of only two paediatric centres in the UK offering CAR T-cell therapy, alongside other specialist immunotherapy treatments.
Joining this team means working in a specialist setting where clinical knowledge, careful attention to detail and compassionate communication all play an important role in patient care.
What You Will Be Doing
- Deliver safe, high-quality and holistic nursing care to children, young people and their families.
- Build trusting relationships with patients and relatives, ensuring their needs, concerns and preferences remain central to care decisions.
- Work collaboratively with doctors, nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Plan and prioritise nursing care according to patients' clinical needs.
- Communicate clearly with colleagues, patients and families, particularly when discussing complex treatment and care requirements.
- Follow safeguarding procedures, clinical governance requirements and relevant hospital policies.
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to safe, evidence-based nursing practice.
- Take charge of the ward when senior nursing staff are absent, once the required competencies have been achieved.
- Demonstrate compassion, professionalism and respect in everyday interactions.
Training and Professional Development
Robin Ward promotes a nurse-led working culture designed to support safe patient care and ongoing professional development. The advertised nursing ratios average approximately one nurse to two patients, helping the team provide attentive care in a specialist setting.
Nurses also benefit from support provided by dedicated central venous access, chemotherapy and nursing education teams. These resources can help staff strengthen their clinical competencies and continue developing their professional knowledge.
The hospital encourages continuing professional development and evidence-based practice. Candidates should be prepared to maintain their professional competencies and keep their knowledge up to date with current developments in children's nursing.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should review the full person specification before applying. The essential requirements include:
- Current Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration appropriate to the clinical speciality.
- A relevant nursing qualification.
- Evidence of continuing professional development and demonstrated clinical competencies.
- Experience caring for acutely or chronically unwell children, or relevant transferable specialist skills.
- An understanding of current professional issues in children's nursing.
- Knowledge of safeguarding, clinical governance, risk management and quality improvement.
- An understanding of evidence-based practice, research and professional revalidation requirements.
- Basic computer skills and strong written and verbal communication.
- The ability to organise workloads, prioritise patient care and manage time effectively.
- The ability to work independently, contribute to a diverse team and delegate tasks appropriately.
- A commitment to compassionate, family-centred care and an inclusive workplace.
Experience in a relevant speciality, familiarity with ward procedures and an assessor or practice supervisor qualification may be advantageous, although candidates should check the official person specification for the complete criteria.
